Happy Passover

Tulips

Happy Purim! May you have a lovely day eating fun treats and exchanging gifts with the fellow women in your life. Checking out a new cute Netflix tv series, Nobody Wants This with Kristen Bell, which is getting good word-of-mouth reviews for a fun 90s style romance. Haven’t finished the series yet, so tentatively recommend, but Kristen Bell shines so far. The food is also good. Whole reason started watching the show.

The last row for the spring beds goes in this week including the deep European beds beside the new walkways. One of the big lessons from the first year of gardening is a heavy hand with mulch and organic fertilizer makes the plants grow. We don’t need the French method where they used to add 500 tons of horse manure per acre although proper gardening can still feel a bit like opening a whole in the ground and pouring in money, the American version is doable with 10-15 tons per acre. If you’re doing a city bed that works out to roughly 6 lbs per 100 sq feet dried organic fertilizer. Shout out to Hudson Hardware in Garner for anyone who is looking for good quality organic soil amendments at reasonable prices. Earthworm castings, bloodmeal, etc.

It’s a cliche mistake most beginners make, but real food has 20-40 trace vitamins and minerals besides N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium). Your taste buds will thank you for going organic. Deep beds are dug 18-24/inches instead of 6-8 which requires an upfront added expense and more labor, but the advantage is once they are in, you don’t have to worry about doing it for 3 more years. It also tends to help with heavy rain flooding which living in North Carolina happens occasionally. Strawberries and blueberries love it if you like either of those fruits. Some people like to only add 1-2 inches every few months, but not us.

Wish someone would make a self-loading mulch Roomba. At least the exercise means more sweets. Have a great week all! Enjoy the beautiful spring weather.
