Oak Adventures

The past few weeks have been a little exciting. Finished the spring garden planting, only to have our huge oak tree drop a major tree sized limb in the driveway. Thankfully, nothing was hurt, but got to say all that chopping and getting rid of it was not on the menu. Well, life happens. So back to the grind and discussing new trends. Seeing a number of edible flowers, especially purple and herbs make some inroads at the local farmers market like lavender scones, but overall winners seems to be sauces. Not sure why. Maybe grilling?

Also, tea. A really popular tea shop in Monroe, NC is A Cause for Tea which features lovely British teas, Australian soaps, sweet baked treats, and charity goods made in Latin America by women learning to sew in a converted downtown 19th Southern Belle home with wrap around front porch and beautiful plates, etc. You can get a large pot of tea to split for $6-7 or an afternoon scones, etc. for $18-20. Tons of curvy women in cute cotton flower printed dresses came to get TikTok and Instagram photos. A meeting of Southern hospitality and future tech.

Which makes you think about the recent well-written article in County Highway about tansy, a traditional herb used in salads and women’s health. Pennyroll is another one. Haven’t made a list yet, but do expect some fashion design houses to take the current health trend with a twist. Spoonflower? Tea dresses are 3-5 yards of fabric. Maybe something smaller like beach or cowboy hats trimmed with custom bias ribbon? Keep seeing big ribbons in the hair trend which feels very 80s. We may also see a return to sun dying, but putting it at the bottom of personal trend list as it takes roughly 3+ months to dye a shirt with say red onions…which seems impractical since most historical costume live events can do the same in a few hours with a heated pot.

Hopefully we’ll get a better idea of trends for the fall next week with July 4th celebrations all over the country. We wish you all the best with you and your family.
