My grandmother’s favorite book was the Thorn Birds. It’s also a famous 4 episode series from the 80s which is an epic Catholic Australian tragedy. The story is of a priest who meets a family and falls along with their only daughter. Pride. Ambition. Human weakness. Faith. Death. Intrigue. With all the tax credits floating around the Outback right now, you have to wonder if some film crew will grab it for inspiration and cash in. Need to find the right redheads to play it though. It’s a beautiful dark love letter to Australia. Plus most of Europe is seen in a flattering light post-WW II from England to Germany.
What would be the equivalent for the US? Has anyone else thought that there’s a rag to riches family story centered around Ivy League colleges for propaganda due? Obviously the US is not Australia, but these 80s franchise reboots really leave some room for more complicated storylines. Instead of Irish, it would probably be Latino? Or Mexican cowboys living in Texas cattle country? Free PR for Harvard? Or Rice? That feels about right. Well, if you want the story idea it’s yours. This seems like something that a smart college professor or career upwardly mobile grad student would write since it’s essentially free PR for the colleges and makes the university look good. You could also do this with Duke as well, but there you have more options. It’s hard to say given North Carolina is into cotton and tobacco instead of livestock if the idea would translate well. The major difference is you’d need to ground whatever version you did in country bluegrass music in say Dallas or Austin instead of London theater.
Alright, lots of sewing this week as we get ready for NY Fashion Week in September. Hope you are having fun too.
